What is Biofeedback?

Biofeedback or electromyography (EMG) is a non-invasive technique used for measuring muscle electrical activity that occurs during muscle contraction and relaxation. This is especially helpful when the level of muscle contraction is small and less easily observed, as in the early stages of recovery or when hemiparesis is severe.

Thanks for the feedback.

Adhesive sensors, connected to a unit, are placed on your skin over specific muscle groups that help you receive information about your muscle activity. This feedback allows clients to make real time changes, such as grading the relaxation or contraction of certain muscles, to achieve the desired results.

See it. Hear it. Do it.

EMG feedback is immediate which provides a “real time” state of muscle activity during movement. The auditory and visual feedback that is provided is instantaneous. Through the use of biofeedback treatment, clients can become more aware of their physical capabilities, which can lead to increased motivation and improved functional outcomes.

Not for everyone.

In order to benefit from biofeedback treatment, the client should demonstrate some degree of voluntary muscle control, follow basic commands, able to utilize the feedback information, and is motivated.

Common conditions treated.

Biofeedback is used to improve many physical and mental health issues including:

  • Muscle weakness
  • Impaired swallowing
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Poor balance or gait
  • Impaired cognition
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Chronic pain

Gaining ground.

Some of the benefits seen through the use of biofeedback include:

  • Improved strength and range of motion
  • Relaxation
  • Spasticity reduction
  • Timing and coordination
  • Diagnose muscle activity
  • Decreased anxiety
  • Pain management
